A Look Back at 2013

As 2013 comes to a close The Rogues would like to say thank you to everyone for their continued support and for sharing our musical journey with us.  We wanted to share some of the highlights from this year.

The band returned to its musical roots and enjoyed public performances in Texas, Louisiana, Maryland, Connecticut and Florida.

Randy designed a tartan for the band in December 2012 that is listed in the Scottish Register of Tartans as The Rogues - United States.  It became available for purchase in January of 2013 and over 20 kilts have been ordered.  Anyone wanting one or information on the tartan can e-mail us at therogues@sbcglobal.net.

We were also able to host two fundraisers this year as well as make a substantial contribution to the Air Force Aid Society.

Our first fundraiser was held at McGonigel's Mucky Duck in Houston, TX in June and was to raise money for the tornado victims in Moore, OK.  Having performed in Oklahoma many times, and since Randy and Bryan have lived there in the past, we were more than happy to help out.  Performances were by The Jig is Up, another popular Houston band, and The Rogues.  We were able to raise $1097 in 3 hours due to the generosity of our Houston Rogues family, and special thanks goes out to Ros Shepherd for organizing the auction and being the awesome person she is, Cherry, and Missy and Harold Best for helping out as they always do.

The second fundraiser was for our dear friends, Ingrid, Klaus and Chela, the owners of Medieval Moccasins.  Ingrid was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in the summer so we immediately planned our fundraiser for October 19th when we would be at the Maryland Renaissance Festival to help with her fight, but unfortunately she passed away only 2 months after diagnosis, so our fundraiser was to help with the medical expenses the family incurred.  We were able to raise almost $6000 at the event and over $10,000 online.  We'd like to thank Mike Rosman the Squire on the WireVolgemutDragonSong, Tinsmith, EJ Jones and The Drum Runners for performing.  Mike Rosman did an awesome job emceeing the event and thank you to everyone who volunteered their time, and especially Stacy Lute and Cherry for their organization skills.

We added two new venues in 2013 - The Connecticut Renaissance Festival Fall Show and the Sarasota Medieval Festival.  Both were great events and we hope to be back next year for more weekends.  It was wonderful to be able to perform again at the Maryland Renaissance Festival, and also the Annapolis Irish Festival for the second year in a row.  Our friends Dublin 5 do a great job of putting on the Irish Festival.  That's a huge amount of work and we greatly appreciate it.

We also performed for a Marine Corps retirement ceremony for Jeff Dubinok at the National Museum of the Marine Corps Semper Fidelis Memorial Chapel near Quantico.  It was a beautiful chapel and the reception at the restaurant down the street was amazing.  Thanks to Trish for asking us to perform.

Ewan and Randy also attended our friends Steve and Karen Francis' party for Steve's retirement from the Army.  Congratulations and thanks to Jeff and Steve for their service, and extra thanks to Steve for all the great photos he takes of the band.

The band added some new faces to the roster in 2013.  Pipers include Kyle Grasty from Pennsylvania and Jamie Everett from Florida.  A new drummer that performed with us at the Connecticut Renaissance Festival, Andrew Meade, from Austin, TX.  Playing a bodhran the way Bryan and I do (LOUD) is not easy, but Andrew was a great addition on that show.  We still have Jimmy, Lars, Bryan, Ewan, Doug Frobese, David Goodman and myself, so no worries there.

The Christmas album, Hellbound Sleigh, is a project that we always said we SHOULD do, but just never did.  Randy was always wary of a Christmas album because he didn't want it just to sound like Christmas tunes played by bagpipes.  He wanted something more along the lines of a Mannheim Steamroller Christmas album, with unique arrangements and instrumentation, where each track is something different, and we think we achieved that.  The feedback on the album has been nothing but positive, from professionals and the public.  Thanks to Lars, Doug, Kyle, Ewan, EJ, Bryan and Miriam-Rose for their contributions, and thanks to Andy Bradley and Les Lentz, the recording engineers in Houston and Maryland respectively.  And much thanks to Todd Shearer for the awesome original cover art and album design.  People always want to know where the name of the album came from.  It's a derivative from the name of the first tune on the album - Hellbound Train -  a wonderful tune by Mark Saul.  Cherry and Randy were visiting friends Steve and Pam Brownlee in Louisiana and jokingly discussing album names, when Cherry threw out Hellbound Sleigh.  Randy loved it and that's what stuck.

The band wrapped up the year with the Dickens on the Strand festival in Galveston, TX in December, a wonderful Dickens era festival that the band has performed at for many years.

As we go into the off-season we wish everyone a happy new year and hope to see you in the near future.  Slainté!

Dickens on the Strand Write-Up

The Rogues were again fortunate to play at this years Dickens on the Strand festival on December 7-8 in Galveston, TX.  This has been a standing gig for the band almost every year since we started.  The line-up consisted of Randy, Jimmy and Doug Frobese.  Bryan had to cancel at the last minute to take care of all the animals on the ranch due to the ice storm that hit northeast Texas that weekend.  It was definitely cold, so attendance was down, but we had a great weekend despite the weather.  The highlight that weekend was the release of the Hellbound Sleigh Christmas album.  Knowing the attendance would be down, we only had Cherry on sales, and we did as well as the year before with 3 sellers and beautiful weather.

As usual, our home base for the weekend was Murphy's Pub on 22nd between Strand and Mechanic streets.  The second highlight of the weekend was their pizza, which we consumed en mass.  The pub has rebuilt the sidewalk in front of the pub and built a cover that extends to the street, allowing for outside tables and covered performance in case of rain.  Fortunately, rain was not an issue, holding off until the festival ended on Sunday.  The rooms provided by the festival were wonderful and greatly appreciated.

It's always great seeing our Texas friends at Dickens on the Strand and we definitely hope to be there again next year.
Keep watching the website for our upcoming shows.  Currently the next show is at the Firelake Grand Casino from 7:00-10:00 in Shawnee, OK for St. Patrick's Day.  Looking forward to seeing our Oklahoma friends there.

New Rogues Album - Hellbound Sleigh - Available in December

Hellbound Sleigh, the 10th and newest album by The Rogues, will be available in CD format in a few days beginning the first week of December.  The downloadable format is available NOW.

After a much-anticipated wait, the final product delivers the quality expected from a Rogues album, as well as being the most creative CD to date.  To quote Randy Wothke, the founder of the group, "I didn't want an album like some other bagpipe Christmas CDs I've heard that were just a bagpipe playing Christmas tunes - and some of the tunes didn't really even work on the bagpipe.  I always wanted something more sophisticated with interesting arrangements."  If you liked the Mannheim Steamroller Christmas albums then you will want to listen to this.

First expected to be out in August and then in October, there were delays involving recording in different states, and while people were on tour, which makes logistics harder to iron out.  After that is the mixing process, and then mastering, which takes a while as well.  And during the recording/mixing process, the artwork and graphics for the album are being created.  Todd Shearer did a fantastic job with the cover art and graphics layout for the CD.

The band talked for years about recording a Christmas album, and now it is finally here.  If you'd like to order yours in time for Christmas just go to http://www.therogues.com/p/hellbound-sleigh.html

The Rogues in Sunny Sarasota

The Rogues just finished up our first-ever weekend at the Sarasota Medieval Fair in sunny Sarasota, FL.
Ewan, Jamie, Bryan, Randy - Photo courtesty Sarasota Medieval Fair
What a great festival.  Everyone was extremely friendly, especially the management when they scrambled to find us a hotel room instead of an RV space at the last minute when the RV broke down 30 miles north of Sarasota the day before the show.
Jamie Everett - Photo courtesy Sarasota Medieval Fair
The site was beautiful and we had a great stage near the front gate that we shared with Bones Medieval Mysteries.  He has a great magic show you should see if you ever get the chance.

The weather was beautiful and the stage was right next to a kumquat tree so the smell of citrus was always in the air.  Couldn't have asked for more.  Ewan, Bryan and Randy were joined by first-timer Jamie Everett, who stepped in at the last minute to fill in the 2nd piper spot.  He did a great job learning our material quickly and fit right in.  All in all it was a fantastic weekend and we hope to be back next year - without the breakdown.

Busy Weekend Ahead

This weekend brings with it the end of the Maryland Renaissance Festival season, however, we will be performing so it won't be all sadness!

Be sure to come out this weekend (the weather is supposed to be Fall in all its glory) and stop by one of our shows - note that our schedule is different than the first two weekends:

White Hart Tavern - 11am
Boars Head Tavern - 12:30p,
Blackfriar Stage - 2pm, 3:45pm and 5:15pm

Also this weekend is our Fundraiser for the family of Ingrid Wendt of Medieval Moccasins. Ingrid passed away this summer, just before MDRF started, after being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. The family has medical and hospice bills that they could use a hand with and we want to give them the biggest hand up that we can.

The Rennies have long been known to be a very community oriented group and Ingrid was one of our brightest beacons and she will be missed tremendously though her light will shine on in all of the lives se touched.

The benefit is at the American Legion Hall, 1905 Crownsville Road, Annapolis, MD. 21401. It starts at 7pm and runs until 11pm

Our emcee for the evening is none other than the very talents and hilarious Michael Rosman of Squire on the Wire fame.

We will have musical entertainment by The Rogues, DragonSong, Tinsmith, E.J. Jones, The Drum Runners and more!

There will be bellydancers!

There will be humor!

There will also be a silent auction as well as a raffle style auction with items provided by wonderful MDRF merchants as well as friends of the family. Trust us when we say that you do not want to miss this auction. The donated items are gorgeous! We are extremely overwhelmed by the generosity of our supporters!

We also have some surprises planned.

So please come out and help us celebrate Ingrid's light while we help this wonderful MDRF staple family. For more information and to preview some of the auction items please visit our Facebook Group - The Ingrid Wendt Healing Fund.

Connecticut Renaissance Festival Wrap-Up

The Rogues had a great time at our first appearance at the Connecticut Renaissance Festival Fall show on September 21-22.  It was great seeing and working with our friends from the Tribal de Luna belly dance troupe again, as well as making new friends.  This was Andrew Meade's first performance with us on the bodhran since Bryan couldn't make it, and he did a great job.

Along with Randy, Jimmy and Ewan, and Cherry handling sales, we had a lot of fun and managed to escape the rain that was predicted for the weekend.  We'll be posting pictures soon from the event and maybe some video.

This was the first year at a new site for the festival in Norwich, CT, and there's talk of the festival possibly getting a permanent site in the same area.  We met lots of great fellow performers and staff, and look forward to performing there again in the future.  Thanks to the festival for bringing us in to perform, and if you're anywhere near Norwich, CT we recommend a visit.

Maryland Renaissance Festival Recap

Piper Jones and belly dancer Kashira join The Rogues Photo by Jason Gray
The Rogues just wrapped up our first two weeks at the Maryland Renaissance Festival playing to huge crowds and great accolades.  The acoustic sound was a hit with everyone we spoke with and it was great seeing all our Maryland friends again.  We had Bryan Blaylock, Jimmy Mitchell, Ewan Brown and Randy Wothke on stage, with the expertise of Kashira belly dancing and the Teelin School of Irish Dance.  We were also joined by new band member, Kyle Grasty, on Labor Day weekend, so it was great having that 3-bagpipe sound.  We were also joined by EJ Jones for a show  the first weekend, who was there with the Piper Jones Band.  The weather couldn't have been better opening weekend - quite a difference from last year. Thanks to Cherry, Pam and Heather, our awesome sales staff for a job well done.

The new album "Hellbound Sleigh" is available for pre-order and will be finished soon.  Look for the release in October.  The Rogues will be back at MDRF for the final weekend, October 19-20, and will also be hosting the fundraiser for the Ingrid Wendt Memorial Healing Fund Saturday night the 19th at the American Legion Hall just down the road from the renaissance festival.  1905 Crownsville Rd, Annapolis, MD 21401.  We'd love to see a great turn out in memory of Ingrid and to help with the accrued medical costs.  Start time 7:00 pm.

The next stop for the band is the Connecticut Renaissance Faire on September 21-22 in Norwich, CT.  This will be our first time at this show and really looking forward to seeing our Connecticut friends there and getting to make some new friends as well.

The Rogues Have Started A Kickstarter Project

In order to get the 10th CD, Hellbound Sleigh, up and out in time for availability at MDRF (and to keep Randy from going into debt to his eyeballs) The Rogues have decided to start a Kickstarter Project to attempt to raise the funds to cover not only what has been spent on recording, but also what needs to be spent going forward on mixing, printing and paying musicians, artists ect.

A goal of $11,000 has been set to cover the above mentioned costs and also a stretch goal of $14,000 which, if met, will mean that all contributors will be invited to join The Rogues at a CD release party with entertainment and beverages provided by the band.

The Kickstarter Project is a short one, with only 19 days to go to meet their goal!

Give enough and you'll receive a thank you in the new album, too, in addition to all the other great rewards.  Whether you only pre-order the album or can contribute more, every bit helps. And don't forget, you receive the reward for your pledge level and all the rewards for less than your pledge (with the exception of limited quantity items), so don't miss your chance to help us complete this historic 10th album, Hellbound Sleigh.  Thanks for your continued support of The Rogues.

Click here to check out this exciting project.

Annapolis Irish Festival Recap

The Rogues were extremely well-received in their second appearance at the Annapolis Irish Festival.

The band performed Friday night on the Fado Stage and Saturday on the Shamrock stage and the  Galway Bay Pavilion Stage.  Rain kept the crowds light on Friday, but Saturday was jam packed and The Rogues performed in front of an enthusiastic crowd.

Stacy Lute, helped out in each show with her amazing belly dancing.  The band was also joined by the Culkin School of Irish Dance on the Main Stage and the Teelin School of Irish Dance on the Galway Bay Pavilion Stage.  Thanks to them for their amazing step dancing.

The Rogues were fortunate to have Kyle Grasty filling in for Lars Sloan who couldn't make it due to a new full-time job.  It was his first time to play with the band and he did a great job.  He may be joining us at the Maryland Renaissance Festival which is coming up fast starting on August 24th.

Thanks also to The Annapolis Irish Festival for putting on a great show.  It's an incredible amount of work, and they are doing a great job.

Kudos to Cherry and Pam for setting up and manning the sales tables and all of our friends for coming out and supporting the band.  We hope to be at the AIF again next year.  If you'd like to see us there please let the festival know at http://www.annapolisirishfestival.com/

The Rogues' 10th Album is in the Works!

A few weeks ago The Rogues went into the recording studio to begin work on their 10th album called Hellbound Sleigh.  Yes, that's right, it's a Christmas album.  We've talked about it for years and it's soon to be a reality.  Traditional Christmas favorites arranged and performed by The Rogues and a few other rockin' tunes.

The name of the album is drawn from one of those tunes called The Hell Bound Train.  The release date is planned to be early September.  The album was begun in Houston and will be finished up in Maryland.  With contributions from Randy Wothke, Lars Sloan, Bryan Blaylock, Doug Frobese, EJ Jones, Ewan Brown, and new member Kyle Grasty, it's gonna be awesome.

Here's a little snippet of one of the tunes - Greensleeves - with accompaniment arranged and played by Randy Wothke and Doug Frobese.  No mixing has been done yet so this is just a raw track.

The Band will be kicking off it's Kickstarter campaign for the album in the next few days where you can pre-order the album or donate more for excellent  rewards.  Keep watching the website for the news.  Slainté!

The Rogues at Church of the Good Shepherd

The Rogues had the pleasure of performing at the Summer Music Festival at Church of the Good Shepherd Episcopal Church in Lake Charles, LA on June 23rd.  The church was beautiful with antique stained glass and dates from the late 1800s.  The staff couldn't have been nicer and the band hopes to be able to play there again in the future.

One long time Rogues fan said that Amazing Grace hadn't sounded that good in years.  Thanks to Wendy Bergin for hiring the band, and trading us her novel for one of our CDs.  Sounds like a great read.  The audience enjoyed the march in at the beginning of the concert and the band marched everyone out at the end.  A nice reception was held afterwards and from talking to the patrons they really enjoyed the show.  The band's next performance will be at the Annapolis Irish festival on July 12-13.  Hope to see all our MD/DC/VA area friends there.

Piping and Drumming Up Funds - Write Up

Bryan Blaylock, Lars Sloan, Doug Frobese, Randy Wothke
The Rogues rocked McGonigel's Mucky Duck on June 22nd to raise money for the Oklahoma tornado victims.  Joined by another Houston favorite, The Jig is Up, they raised $1047.00 (UPDATE - total is now $1097.00 thanks to an online donation) for the tornado victims in three hours.

This was The Rogues' first performance at The Duck for a few years, and look for more performances to come.  This was the band's first fundraiser for the year, besides their ongoing effort for the Air Force Aid Society from sales of the DVD from their show with the Air Force Symphony Orchestra, and the next fundraiser will be for a friend on October 19th in Crownsville, MD when the band is performing at the Maryland Renaissance Festival.  Stay tuned for more details!

Special thanks to Joe Taylor for his generous donation that put us over the $1000 mark and the Red Lion Pub for donating a gift card to raffle.  It was a wonderful effort by all and a very enjoyable event.  All the funds raised will be given to the Red Cross to distribute to the tornado victims.

Cherry and I recently returned from Bryan and Heather Blaylock's wedding on December 29th in Sulphur Springs, TX.  What a hoot!  Saw lots of friends there and had a great time.  Lyn and Heather Bell even travelled all the way from Baltimore, MD to be there.   Heather and Bryan made their entrances for the wedding on horseback, riding beautiful black Friesian horses that they breed at their own Wind Dancer Ranch in Cooper, TX.  Pipers John Imes and Jimmy Mitchell did a great job piping in the bride and groom.  Bryan and Heather exchanged vows that brought tears to everyone's eyes, then we were treated to a great dinner and reception.  There was an awesome jam session with Jimmy Mitchell, John Imes, Bryan Blaylock, Daniel Dossey and myself with everyone dancing along.  Lars Sloan was missed due to a family crisis.  It was so great seeing all our friends there.  The Rogues wish Bryan and Heather the best in their marriage and are glad we could be a part of it.
